Regular Dental Hygiene Appointments for Optimum Oral Health

When you visit Chinook Family Dental Care for your Chinook Centre Dental Hygiene Therapy, our team of dental hygienists will clean your teeth both above and below the gum-line. We use both traditional hand scalers and our ultrasonic scaling tools to remove calcium deposits, called calculus, from your teeth.

In addition to your thorough teeth cleaning above and below the gum-line, your Chinook Family Dental Care Hygienist will complete a number of oral treatments which include:

  • A comprehensive periodontal assessment, checking for gum recession, the presence of gingivitis and possible gum disease
  • Polishing your teeth to remove hard to remove surface stains
  • Fluoride treatment which strengthens the enamel in areas that may be weak
  • An extra-oral exam at least once a year to check the head, neck and jaw areas for abnormalities
  • An oral cancer screening that checks the gum tissues, tongue, and lips for signs of oral cancer
  • Take diagnostic digital x-rays (when needed)

Your Dental Hygiene Therapy also includes an examination by Dr. James Chen to evaluate the current health of your teeth, gums, and the surrounding tissue.

How Often Should I Have a Dental Hygiene Visit?

Your hygiene therapy needs depend on several factors. If your teeth are more susceptible to the accumulation of plaque and calculus, if you have crowded teeth, or if you have advanced gum disease, the frequency of your visits may not match the other members of your family. Our dental team evaluates every patient on an individual basis to determine the dental hygiene schedule that will best meet the specific needs of each patient. Most patients visit Chinook Family Dental Care for their dental hygiene appointments every 6 months, but some people may benefit with a hygiene visit every 3-4 months. Others may only require a hygiene appointment every 9 to 12 months. The dental hygienists at Chinook Family Dental Care will advise you on how often you should visit our Chinook Centre dental practice to maintain your oral health and wellness.
